Son-Kol Lake: Two Days in the Heart of the Kyrgyz Mountains
Son-Kol is the largest freshwater lake in Kyrgyzstan and the country's second biggest lake after Issyk-Kul.
Tour details
Son-Kol is the largest freshwater lake in Kyrgyzstan and the country's second biggest lake after Issyk-Kul.
Sitting at 3,016 m above sea level in a sweeping basin between the Tian Shan ridges, it lies in the north-western part of Naryn Region.
The drive to the lake is an experience in its own right: the route passes Orto-Tokoyskoye Reservoir and climbs through the scenic Kalmak-Ashuu and Terskey-Torpok passes — the latter known locally as "33 Parrots."
In summer, the shores of Son-Kol come alive with the yurt camps of local herders. Horseback rides along the water, a swim in the alpine lake and an evening bonfire under the open sky are all part of the experience. Season: June–September. The mountain passes are snow-blocked from autumn through late spring.
