Tour details

Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve is one of the most pristine natural areas in Kyrgyzstan, included in the UNESCO international biosphere network in 1978. It lies on the slopes of the Chatkal Ridge in the western Tian Shan, in Jalal-Abad Region, approximately 550 km from Bishkek. Elevations across the reserve range from 1,200 to 4,247 m (Mustор Peak).

At the heart of the reserve is Sary-Chelek Lake at 1,873 m above sea level — the second deepest lake in Kyrgyzstan. It is surrounded by six smaller alpine lakes connected by the Kara-Suu River, and forests of Tian Shan spruce and Semenov fir. Wildlife includes lynx, roe deer, porcupine and the elusive Pallas's cat.

The drive from Bishkek is a journey in itself: Too-Ashuu and Suusamyr passes, Chychkan Gorge, the vast Toktogul Reservoir and the confluence of the Naryn River. On the return, a stop at Kurpsai HPP and roadside honey from Chychkan round out the experience.
