Tour details
Borulu lake is a landslide-dammed lake tucked into Sokuluk Gorge in the northern Kyrgyz Range, about 50 km from Bishkek.
It formed in 1885 when the Belovodsk earthquake triggered a massive rockslide that blocked the river — the lake filled in overnight. The result is a deep emerald-green body of water sitting at around 1,900 metres above sea level. Its Kyrgyz name, Kök-Köl, means "blue lake."
The trail runs through a gorge that sees far fewer visitors than Ala Archa or Kegety. The route is 3.5 km one way with 600 metres of elevation gain — moderate in difficulty, and genuinely challenging for beginners who aren't used to sustained ascent. The walk takes 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
This tour suits travellers who prefer quiet trails over crowded ones: no gift shops, no cable cars, just mountains and a lake that most tourists haven't heard of. The price covers transport from Bishkek and a licensed guide.
